Around 240 players are expected to come out for the first House football practice today to begin a week and a half of conditioning and practicing before starting the 28-game schedule to determine the winner of the House Football Perpetual Trophy and the opponents for the Yale intra-college champions.
Adolph Samborski '26, director of House athletics, announced last night that candidates should go to Dillon Field House any time after 1:30 o'clock to receive complete equipment and the report' fully dressed, to him on the field at 3:30 o'clock for 20 minutes of exercises.
More Specific Drilling Then
After the calisthenics, linemen, ends, and backfield men will report to coaches selected, according to their experience, to drill the players for more specific positions. In this "departmental work" the linemen will practice on blocking and tackling, the backfield men on passing, running, and kicking, and the ends on going down the field after punts and catching passes.
On next Monday the players are scheduled to work under their own House coach after the exercise period, to start perfecting offensive and defensive plans. The coaches are chosen from the schools usually and as far as possible from different colleges so that varied types of offenses are used. This results in more interesting games for both players and spectators.
Each House Plays Twice a Week
When the regular games have gotten under way in the week of October 12, the individual House coaches will be in the charge of the pre-practice exercise.
The schedule for House football is to consist of 28 games resulting from a round robin in which each House plays the other once. Under this arrangement each House will play two games a week.
Players Treated Well
Unusual facilities for intra-college athletics are offered in the football program, Harvard's most highly organized House sport. Besides furnishing all equipment, and keeping the Dillon Field House shop available for repairs, the College has a doctor present at all the games and almost always at the practices, too. Regular Board officials in official dress are in charge of the games, in which each team had its own jerseys and coach.
Adams House's Gold Coasters have walked off with the league championship for the last two years and split even in two games with the Yale winners. Many of the other House teams have been accustomed to challenge Yale teams in past years; and one season, seven Houses sent their men against the Elis on the day before the Varsity game with the Blue.
Samborski does not expect to start the inter-House touch football league for a few days, waiting to make sure the football league gets off to a good start. The winners of the touch football league will also meet the Yale winners in New Haven on November 20.
Last season about 200 men came out for House football but compulsory exercise requirements are expected to raise that number a bit. The House squads are usually limited to 30 players, the maximum manageable number.
