Track Team Will Compete Officially In First Intramural Meet Thursday

Ederman Only Crimson Man To Place in Newton Meet

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

With no meets as yet scheduled in the intercollegiate circuit for the summer, the Crimson track team, after several weeks of inactivity, slowly got under way last weekend with several of the squad participating in the Newton Y.M.C.A. meet Saturday. First official meet of the summer is an intramural contest scheduled for this Thursday for Varsity and Freshman runners.

Only member of the Harvard contingent to place in the Newton meet, and surprise star of the day was Freshman Arnold Ederman, who took first in the 880, after staving off what threatened to be a last second bid by Ty Brown of Belmont. Don McKinnon, captain of the team and 100 yard dash star, failed to place in his event largely because of lack of practice.

Novel Meet Thursday

The first chance that Jaako Mikkola, track mentor, will have to size up his charges in toto will be the intramural meet scheduled for Thursday. For the first time in the long record of intramural meets, prises will be awarded in four field and four running events. The field events will be high jump, pole vault, hammer, and discus; the running events the 100, 300, 600 yard, and a distance race between two of the Charles River bridges.

The war also made itself felt in the events planned for this week's meet when a race over the obstacle course at Soldiers Field was placed on the program.

Few Stars Left

Remnants of last year's Varsity and Freshman squad which have returned include, besides McKinnon, Jack and Bill Fisher, stars of the hammer, and Pete Garland, whose discus hurling broke records in the Freshman Yale meet last year. Mikkola is expecting the Class of '46 to be strong in runners but the weight men have not yet shown much promise.

Focal point of the summer squad's efforts will be the New England Championship Meet of the A.A.U. for August 30.
