John M. Potter '26, former Harvard assistant professor and special side in the Office of Strategic Services, has been named president of Robart and William Smith College. He will commence his duties at Geneva, New York, on September 1.
At Harvard Potter held the position of Assistant professor in History and Literature, teaching a course on medieval Germany and lecturing on the Holy Roman Empire for History 1. He has also been Senior Tutor of Eliot House since 1933, member of the Faculty Council, and of the Committee on Distribution.
President Conant abolished the rank of assistant professor at Harvard in 1939 but Professor Potter's tenure extended through the spring of 1941. It was not renewed despite the organized protest of the History and Literature concentrators.
