Memorial Church Reduces Programming Amid University Budget Cuts
"The Lampoon is about to contribute to the war effort with a War Garden," it was announced last night by Oliver E. Allen '43, Ibis. "The plot of earth between the north wall and the sidewalk, four feet by two inches, is to be utilized for tomatoes, carrots, Swiss chard, and hops."
Surrounded by Eric Larrabee '43, Chief Gardener, and John L. Hoffman '43, who fondly caressed several packages of seeds but refused to comment, Allen explained that the move would help to relieve the agricultural shortage. Some of the vegetables will be eaten by the 'Poonsters to cut House Committee expenses, being in line with the "Buy Lampoon" policy instituted last fall.
A similar program was put into effect during the last war. Produce grown in this same spot by Lampoon editors was pooled with the fruits of other Cambridge emergency gardens and was given to the Red Cross for distribution.
