BIG ATHLETIC PLAN SET FOR THIS SUMMER

Announcing plans for baseball games with nearby Army and Navy Camps, William J. Bingham '16, director of athletics, described yesterday a full athletic program for this summer in which the emphasis will be on House sports and in which intercollegiate contests will be only on an informal basis.

Although Harvard has played the cadets of the Coast Guard Academy at New London before, this summer will be the first time the College has ever come up against enlisted men. There is also a good possibility that the football team may play the naval training station team of the University of North Carolina on September 26 if the agreement with Yale and Princeton permits.

Good Coaching for Houses

House crews will have the advantage of excellent coaching this summer, as Varsity coach, Tom Bolles, and Freshman coach, Harvey Love, are going to devote their talents to the House eights. Inexperienced upperclassmen will be able to start from scratch in the "Leviathan" with the new Freshmen instead of going right into one of the slender shells. There is a chance that the Union Boat Club will organize a summer regatta in which the House crews will participate.

Inter-House hardball and softball leagues are going to be under the direction of Adolf Samborski '26, director of intramural athletics. There also will probably be some A. A. U. track meets, but no dual meets will be scheduled.

The tennis team is expected to play some informal matches with nearby tennis clubs such as Milton and Longwood.

Only soccer and lacrosse are definitely out of the summer program because of the lack of room since Soldiers Field will be used to a great extent by drills of Naval and Army organizations.

Compulsory Exercise the Same

The requirements for compulsory exercise are going to be exactly the same as they were this spring. Summer students will have to buy a special summer participation card to obtain use of the facilities.

Incoming Freshmen, who will be living in the Houses this summer, will take part in all the inter-House activities. Freshman teams, however, will not be discontinued. There will be a Freshman football team coached by Henry Lamar even though exceptional newcomers can compete for Varsity positions.

Harlow to Lack McCoy

For this year's Freshmen who will become Sophomores in February, 1943, a Junior Varsity football team is planned, to be coached by Floyd Stahl. Dick Harlow's Varsity staff is going to be minus the aid of backfield coach Al McCoy, who is working at Annapolis.

The only thing that is worrying Bingham now is the danger that crowds at football games will be prohibited if the Boston coast is bombed.

For the sake of economy and also because equipment is hard to replace, football players will be asked to take better care of their protective paraphernalia in the future.
