Headlining a list of top-flight personalities from stage, screen, radio, and the United States Marines, Jinx Falkenburg, America's magazine cover girl and queen of the billboards, will lecture very, very informally and exchange quips with the Class of '45 at the Freshman Smoker on May 11, the Yardling Committee announced yesterday.
That the Smoker, will be anything but a one star affair is affirmed by a startling eleventh-hour addition to the cast which was consummated last night. The added attraction is Arthur Blake, one of the country's outstanding mimics, who has given two command performances at the White House within the past year. Blake, who at present is breaking all records at a local Boston night club, is famous for his impersonation of Mrs. Roosevelt; and it is reported that upon seeing the mimic's antics the First Lady laughed heartily, as did the President.
Beatrice Kay on Bill
The musical side of the program will start off with songs by Beatrice Kay, star of radio's "Guy Nineties" program, whom Walter Winchell claims is the owner of the best pair of legs on Broadway. The Jones Brothers, a hot colored trio, are expected to shake the house down later in the evening, with their interpretations of several swing classics.
Jerry Lester, noted funny-man who took over Bing Crosby's program last summer, will provide the evenings laughs with his rapid-fire banter in the well-known Bob Hope fashion. Continuing in a light, though military vein, there will be brief non-official, non-technical talks by Lieutenant-Commander T. A. Collins, former Marine flier who is now senior member of the Naval Aviation Cadet Selection Board of the First Naval District, and Captain William F. Upton Jr., director of morale and recreation at Camp Edwards.
Pleasant news to non-teetotaling Freshmen is the committee's announcement that a license has been obtained to allow beer to be served, and according to Richard McCarthy, chairman, there will be barrels of brew on hand. Cigarettes, tobacco, pretzels, crackers, Coca-Cola and other refreshments will also stock the commissary which the Yardlings will attack after the show.
In line with a policy of economy, due to the fact that this year's Smoker budget is 50 per cent less than that of last year, the affair will be held in the Union, which is less expensive than previously used Sanders Theatre. The show will begin at 8:30 o'clock, and will continue indefinitely.
