Yardling Lacrosse Squad Loses to Deerfield, 18-5

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Lawrence Academy bested the Freshman baseball team 1 to 0 in a tight pitching duel on Soldiers Field Saturday afternoon. At the same time, the Yardling lacrosse squad lost to Deerfield 18 to 5 on the Business School field.

Irv Rudman lost his mound battle with visiting hurler Dean Ellis in the fourth inning, when a lapse in the Crimson inner defense allowed the lone score. After Lawrence slugger Nick Rodis whaled a triple to deep left, Rudman issued his only pass to Joe Hennessey. Then, with men on first and third, the Lawrence squad pulled a double steal, successful because shortstop Jim Gallagher and second sacker Vinnie Leahy crossed their signals on a cut-off play designed to nail Rodis at the plate.

Hamlen Tagged Out at Plate

The main Crimson threat came in the fifth, when Hoss Hamlen was tagged out at the plate, trying to stretch his long triple into a home run. Don Richards, left fielder, fanned three times with runners on second and third.

In the lacrosse game, Coach George Hanford's disciples took their first engagement on the chin. Only two-goal scorer for the Crimson was Bradley Harris, and Bill Thomas was outstanding on defense. The squad meets Tufts at home in its next game on Wednesday.
