Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
With gifts of seven errors, 10 walks, a balk, and a hit batsman to work with, the Wentworth Institute baseball team had to add only six hits to beat the Yardling nine by a 9 to 5 count yesterday on Soldiers Field.
Although they punched out eight blows, the Freshmen booted away their opening ball game with miscues when the chips were down. Only two of the visitors' runs were earned, and a base on balls paved the way for them.
Mains Errs Three Times
But hurler Jim Mains couldn't complain about lack of support, because he made three of the errors himself, in addition to giving 11 men free tickets to the basepaths. The big, blond, right-hander has plenty of stuff but needs more practice under fire.
Wentworth started off on the right foot with a tally in the opening frame. The Crimson came back with two in the second, and went way out in front with three more in the fourth. Bill Shealy on the mound for the winners, went to the showers after that outburst, and Harvard was thoroughly shackled by Jee Sawyer, his successor, who get credit for the victory.
Mains and his support began weakening in the fifth as two of the visitors crossed the plate. Three more came over in the next inning, and a three-run rally on three errors in the ninth sewed up the game.
