Larger Woman Enrollment Expected at Summer School

The presence of women at the Summer School has always been one of the big drawing cards in its favor. This year, however, there will be a far larger and more varied contingent than ever before.

Practically none of the major women's colleges in the East will hold summer sessions this year, with the result that all of their students who wish to study in the summer will come to Harvard. In past years (he majority of women in the Summer School have come from western state universities, but this year the number will be augmented by all of the women who wish to come here from the eastern colleges like Vassar, Smith, Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, and Bryn Mawr.

Naturally, a whole set of new provisions has to be set up for this great influx of women. The major problem is in living accommodations. If present plans go through, the woman from these eastern colleges will five in he Radcliffe halls along with those Radcliffe students who attend Summer School. Other women students, such as school teachers and state university undergraduates, will room in the Yard as in past years.

Another innovation planned for the summer is that the girls from the eastern colleges will be "temporary transfers" to Radcliffe College; thus Radcliffe will have complete supervision over all those who live in its dormitories.

Last year there were 2145 students in the Summer School, of whom 57 per cent were men and 48 per cent women. Although the trend in the last few years has been towards a growing proportion of women, this year will probably see that trend reversed. Despite the large numbers of women who are expected to attend, there will probably be a considerably greater number of men, especially Harvard undergraduates. It is certain, however, that the total number of students will be far larger than last year's 2145; in fact, it will probably be considerably in excess of this year's total enrollment of 3545 undergraduates.
