Faced with the grim reality that most of its graduating class will see action in the war at sea within four months, the University's ROTC Unit held its first wartime Visitor's Day Review at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon in Memorial Hall before a distinguished group of Naval and civilian guests.
For the 54 Seniors who will get their commissions after Commencement in June, the review marked one of the high points in the four year course, and brought them face to face with their approaching duties as officers of the fleet. For the 236 other undergraduates who took part, the review had an added significance under the threat of their being called to service before the completion of their college course should the national emergency, demand it.
Battalion Marches In
The battalion paraded into the hall in four companies, each headed by the company commander. The colors were marched on by the color guard and presented to the color company. The Unit presented arms with military precision, and the National Anthem was played.
Under the staccato commands of the Battalion Commander, the Unit was put through the Manual of Arms--right shoulder, left shoulder and present arms. The list of special prizes was read off, and the student winners stepped out of the ranks and formed a line before the reviewing stand for the presentation. Lieutenant D. G. Maraspin, USNR, Secretary of the Massachusetts Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, made the awards which the society gives for general excellence They were presented to William Wesselhoeft '42 and Maynard M. Miller '43.
Admiral Tarrant Present
Rear Admiral W. T. Tarrant, U.S.N. Commandant of the First Naval District, was the senior Naval Officer present. Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. '21, prominent member of the Visiting Committee, was unable to attend, but Major General Miles, U.S.A., Commander of the First Corps area that comprises practically all of New England, was present.
Representing the University in the reviewing stand were Dean Buck, Dean Hanford, Jerome D. Greene '96, Secretary of the Corporation, Dean Leighton, and Richard M. Gummere, Chairman of the Committee on Admission.
