Winthrop's hockey team stretched their domination of Yale-Harvard House competition to three years by subduing Davenport College, 2-1, at the Boston Skating Club yesterday. The outstanding Puritan club put on a show of excellent skating and accurate shooting to edge a Yale sextet for the third successive year.
Bill La Croix led the House six in this win by ramming both Crimson tallies into the Davenport net. His mates on the Puritan first line, Hal Tilman and Bill Butcher, both assisted in La Croix's first score, and Defense man Jim Anthrop aided his second dash in the closing minutes of the third period.
Close Game
Close throughout, the battle opened with the ineffectual attempts of either squad to carry the puck even close to the opposing twines. 'La Croix broke the lethargy with a dash from the blue line, passed to Tilman, who flipped in turn to Butcher, whose goal-mouth pass to the Puritans captain, coach, and star made possible the opening score.
The second period see-sawed back and forth, Davenport rushes being stopped by the tough Winthrop defense man and Puritan advances being just as effectively controlled by a determined Yale defense. But it was in the third period that the Crimson House leaders displayed the offense that has been stopped but once this season.
This Winthrop, beaten only by the non-league Dormitory team, emerges as the champion of both the Blue and the Crimson for the third consecutive year.
