Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
In one of the most exciting meets in Eastern Intercollegiate history, the Big Green swimmers from Hanover-way nosed out Hal Ulen's Varsity tankmen yesterday afternoon at the Dartmouth pool by a score of 39 to 36.
It was the first time that a Dartmouth swimming team has beaten the Crimson since the competition started in 1931. Thus, an 11-year winning streak was all too abruptly snapped off.
Curwen Swims Butterfly
Ulen used every trick in the bag to try and take the meet, even living up to his promise to swim free style artist. Bus Curwen in the 200 yard breast stroke, and for a while it looked as though his plan would work.
But Dartmouth had too much power and by winning the 400 yard free style relay, which was the most crucial race of the meet, the Indians were able to overcome the four point lead the Crimson had built up and to win the meet by a scant three points.
O'Mara Beats Drucker
The day's outstanding upset occurred when Captain Jim O'Mara of Dartmouth won the 150 yard back stroke by a nose from Harvard's Bill Drucker. Everybody had predicted this would be a close race, but the feeling was that "Druck" would take O'Mara when the chips were down. Instead, O'Mara stayed on Drucker's heels throughout the event and in the last few yards forged ahead to win by a fraction of a second.
For the Crimson, "Big John" Eusden easily turned in the finest performance when he chalked up first places in the 50 and 100 yard free styles. Bus Curwen also did a good job by taking an unexpected first place in the 200 yard butterfly.
