23 MEN ENTER WAR SERVICE

Two Drafted, Many Enlist, Rest Take Special Courses

In the past month 23 University men have taken temporary leave of absence from College to assist in the war effort. Of these, two have been drafted and the rest have either volunteered for the armed forces or signed up for specialized war training of various sorts.

Most of these undergraduates may be expected to return to College at the end of the war, said Dean Phelps of the Records Office. He explained further that so far the general attitude of Harvard undergraduates has been much more restrained than was the case in the last war.

Following is a list of Harvard undergraduates who have applied for and received leaves of absence for the duration:

Daniel D. Barker '42, drafted; Nicolas M. Betancourt '45, joined Cuban armed forces; Thomas P. Brooks, Jr. '45, taking airplane mechanics course at Roosevelt Field; Edward A. Callanan, enlisted; Warren M. Cannon '42, taking IA course at Business School; Charles F. Choate '43, enlisted; Robert U. Duggan '44, joined Air Corps;

Edwin G. Eklund, Jr. '42, taking IA course at Business School; Carl H. Imlay '43, enlisted; Joseph G. T. Knowles '42, entered armed service; Robert W. Lerner '43, entered defense industry; Paul J. Miller, Jr. '42, taking IA course at Business School; Richard G. Mintz '43, entered CAA.

Frederich B. Myers '43, attending N. E. Aircraft School; John L. Newman '44, called by Navy; Stanford L. Optner '42, IA course at Business School; Clay H. Orvis '44, enlisted in medical unit; Einar C. Palm '43, drafted;
