Hopes for the best M.I.T. swimming team in history came to a watery grave in the Techmen's glass enclosed mausoleum last night as Hal Ulen's boys eked out a 60 to 15 victory, winning every event except the dive.
Before the Varsity meet, the Crimson Jayvees had a little more trouble, but a first and a second in the dive clinched the 37-29 triumph over the Tech Freshmen, High point in this battle was Ted Wardwell's new pool record of 1:05.2 in the 100-yard backstroke for the Engineers.

This record lasted until the first event of the big meet, when Crimson Captain Bill Drucker was clocked unofficially at 1:04.3 in the first leg of the medley relay. He also beat 1:05.2 on his way to an easy first in the 150-yard event.
From Coach Ulen's point of view the big event of the evening was the victory of his son Don in the breaststroke. He stated that the times were only average, but that most would be lowered in future competition when his swimmers are forced to exert themselves a bit more, and when certain style kinks are ironed out.
