In spite of the loss by default of two contenders, Dudley and Eliot, the first House swimming meet of the season went off with considerable success last night, yielding victories for Leverett, Winthrop, and Dunster. Earlier in the afternoon the Adams basketball team gained a 44 to 13 win over Dunster and Winthrop boat Dudley 38 to 16.
Kirkland House lost its marine supremacy to the Bunnies by a score of 31 to 28 after four years of championship squads. Leverett gained its margin with wins in five of the seven events, leaving only the 50 and 100 yard free styles to the Deacons.
Much closer was the Winthrop one-point victory against Lowell, with a final score of 29 to 28. Not decided until the last event, the 200 yard relay, the meet was very close all the way.
Lowell's Oliver Morton turned in the best time of the evening with a 26.4 second 50 yard swim. For the Puritans the standout swimmers were Hank Arthur in the free style, Steve Wise in the backstroke, and Tom Holyoke in the relay.
Taking only three firsts, but dominating the second places, the Dunster squad took Adams by a handy margin of 38 to 19. Most notable race of the meet was the 100 yard breast stroke, won in fast time by Frank Padgett of Adams.
Both of the House basketball events were very one-sided, especially the Winthrop-Dudley contest. High scorer for the Puritan five was Bruce Smart, while Thayer Drake played an excellent defensive game.
