In one of the season's top upsets, the Kirkland Deacons beat the league leaders from Leverett House yesterday on a pass interception with 60 seconds to go in the last quarter. Meanwhile the Winthrop eleven fought the Dunster Funsters to a scoreless tie, pulling themselves into a draw for first place in the House series.
A slippery field kept both the Leverett and Kirkland running attacks from functioning during most of the game. Almost all the ground gaining was made on a few long passes by the Deacons, one in the first play of the game.
Leverett Leads Attack
On the offensive most of the time, led by back Lee Sosman, the Bunnies threatened seriously in the third quarter, but lost the ball after being set back by two penalties, on for holding, and one for offside. Several other possible Leverett drives were stalled by fumbles.
After the game seemed doomed to a scoreless tie, Ralph West, Deacon tail-back, intercepted a desperate Bunny pass on their 40 and ran for a score. The extra point try was missed by drop-kicker George Albion.
Winthrop Ties Dunster
Rocking back and forth across the 50 yard stripe, the Puritan-Funster clash was doomed to a scoreless tie from the first. If either team showed any superiority it was Winthrop, which made two scoring threats.
Winthrop reached the 20 in the last period on its passing attack, but could not push the ball further. Absent from the Puritan lineup was Gershon Ross, star back, who is out with a sprained ankle for the rest of the season, but Ralph Davenport made a fine showing at the bucking back spot. Ken Fremont-Smith at tackle and Fairfield Goodale at guard sparked the Winthrop line in a contest where both forward walls were very strong.
Disastrous fumbles by both teams wrecked attempts to score, while the strength of the two lines kept the ball between the two 30 yard stripes for most of the game.
Since there are no games scheduled for tomorrow the next House football contests will take place on Monday.
