Brown Holds Scrimmages Before Basketball Opener

Keene Switched to Guard from Center

By Melvin J. Kessel

Coach Earl Brown has been putting his Varsity basketball squad through a lot of scrimmaging sessions, rounding them into shape for the rapidly approaching opener with M.I.T. on December 4 and for a tough schedule that has the team playing around two games a week. Last night a long defensive and offensive workout featured the practice.

Besides this, Brown is trying to fit some games with service teams into the regular schedule, and the squad may also play a few practice games with nearby Army, Navy, and Coast Guard quintets.

Keene Playing Guard

With Bunks Burditt, Hugh Hyde, and Freshman George Boston, football end who played for a good Dean team last year, making the center spot just about the most strongly fortified position on the team, Mike Keene has been switched to guard. Keene was center and captain of the '45 squad.

Dean Hennessey and Mike De Leo, two other members of the Freshman team that compiled a very creditable record last year, were working out with the Varsity last night. But '45 players Dick Forster and Keene will be playing soccer until after this weekend, although they have been getting out for a few practices; and Don Richards is carrying the mail for Dick Harlow.

The squad has been scrimmaging since the third night out and last night two Varsity teams worked on offense and defense. Among the players were big Hugh Hyde, Al Reid, Tom Axon, Dick Sorlien, George Dillon, and Don Lutze, besides Freshmen Mike Fanasler, Mal Moley, and Ray Eder.

On the adjoining court, Coach Floyd Stahl was putting about 35 men, composed of Freshmen and upperclassmen, through a practice in preparation for the schedule that they will play as a combined J. V. Freshman team as was done in football.
