Entering the tenth day of its intensive two-week drive ending Friday, the Harvard Service Fund Drive "is off to a good start" John W. Richardson '43, treasurer, reported last night. "Less than 50 percent of the actual amount pledged has been collected, however," he warned.
A total of $4000 was collected at registration and an additional $8000 has been pledged since then. This total of $12,000 to $13,000 was still about a thousand dollars short of the total set by the Fund Committee under a wartime budget.
More for Charity
The increase of about $5000 over last year's drive will go entirely to charities, since the fixed contributions of the drive to PBH and the Student Council will not be changed. "The success of the drive will definitely mean that no further canvassing will be done among undergraduates this year," Richardson asserted.
Leverett House was far in the lead among those reporting on the drive collection last night with $525 collected out of a pledged $861, while Lowell barely nosed out Winthrop for second place with $400 collected to the Puritans' $390. Several Houses have not yet brought in their entire returns and collectors were reminded that all canvassing must be finished by the end of this week.
Service Fund New
The Harvard Service Fund Drive was newly instituted this year in an effort to coordinate and centralize all donations by Harvard students to charities and student organizations.
A contribution of seven dollars has been asked from each student, and reports indicated that almost without exception this minimum was being met. Dining Hall coupons may also be used to pay off pledges to the drive.
