79 Enter University Tennis Tournament; Al Everts Out

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Seventy-nine men, including Varsity captain Jim Jenkins, Dick Sorlien and Ted Cohn, all Varsity players from last spring's team, have signed up for the University Tennis Tournament which starts this week. Notably absent from the tournament list, which closes today at 5 o'clock, was Al Everts, present University champion, who will not be able to defend his title because of an operation undergone recently.

The draw will be posted in the Tennis & Squash Shop probably by tomorrow and Coach Jack Barnaby has announced that entrants must be prompt about playing off matches because of the later-than-usual start of College and the imminence of winter weather, threatening to be "tough" on defaults for laggards.

Hyde Not Entered

Hugh Hyde, Varsity number three player last spring, has not entered because he is out for cross country. But all of the outstanding Freshman players that have warmed the cockles of Coach Barnaby's heart are ready for action.

The list of men selected for the fall Varsity squad, chosen by Barnaby at the Divinity courts on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons last week, has been posted in the Tennis & Squash Shop. Forty-four men, headed by Jenkins, comprise the list.

Freshmen Look Great

With several good September Freshman prospects joined to the already proven July contingent from '46, Mal Moley, Vince Brandt, and Houston Warren, Barnaby is looking forward to a very successful season.

The candidates have been grouped into three tournaments except for Varsity men from last spring and the July Freshmen who have already earned places on the Varsity. Candidates' showings in these tournaments will either advance them to a higher one of the three groups or else demote them to a lower squad.
