CROSS COUNTRY HANDICAP RUN TODAY OVER TOUGH COURSE

With a heavily handicapped dark horse installed as the favorite, the University cross country handicap will be run this afternoon over a grueling three and a half mile course.

Despite the return of several lettermen from last year's squad, and the good showing of a few Sophomores, an unknown is expected to cross the line first, since the favorites give the other entrants all the way from a four to seven and a half minutes advantage. Gil Stewart '43 won the meet two years in a row by reason of a large handicap and last year Jack Jillson '42, who is now in the Naval Air Corps, finished first largely for the same reason.

However, one of the late starters will most likely turn in the best actual time. Coach Jaakke Mikkola has been pleased with the team's workout this week and thinks the harriers will have a better than average year.

Fred Phinney '43 and Bill Palson '44 are among the returning lettermen and should do well this year, despite a stiff schedule, which includes the traditional battles with Yale and Princeton. Among the Sophomores, Ollie Filley looks especially promising.

A Freshman team has been organized, but instead of being strictly an all '46 outfit it will resemble a Jayvee team. However, the main burden in this squad's matches will always fall on the Freshmen.
