Strong Springfield to Face Varsity Booters

Faced with the toughest assignment of the season, that of defeating a champion team well on its way to another outstanding record, the Varsity soccer team faces a severe test against Springfield College this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock on the Business School Field. While the veterans are engaged on Field 1, the Freshmen will meet the M. I. T. yearlings on Field 2, in a struggle which should decide whether the Yardlings will be a league threat this year.

The Varsity booters are riding a victory wave going into this crucial contest. With successive wins over Tufts and Clark Universities behind them, the Crimson looks to be in a position to offer a great deal of opposition to the Springfield aggregation, which is just as tough as '41's brilliant outfit.

Maroon Loaded With Talent

But his is the tough one, Coach Brock of the Maroon has a wealth of material at his disposal. Although handicapped by the injury of veteran wing Dick Havel and fullback Stan Christman in last week's impressive win over Williams, the men in maroon can boast of threats in Captain Irv Schmid, hard-playing center forward and inside forward Wilbur Eaton.

To match the power that is coming out of the west to menace the Varsity's untied and unscored on record, the canny Scot has a number of standouts among his veterans. Bob Harbson at full and George Mallory at halfback are the key links in a defense that will be completed by goalie Doug Thompson or his alternate, Mike Keene, fullback Casey Giles, halfbacks Jack Clarke, and Ward Slingerland.

The Crimson offense, unusually effective thus far, will be sparked by Captain Dick Gifford, all-New England forward, high-scoring shot specialist Thayer Drake, and speedy wing Eli Berman. Jim Apthrop, who has risen from the scrubs to cop a first-string position, and Jack Calhoun, who shares scoring honors with Drake, complete the first line.
