By saving the life of an injured Army pilot who had crashed his plane into Long Island Sound, Lucien H. Warner Jr. '45, of Mystic, Connecticut and Weld Hall, has become Harvard's latest war hero.
Enjoying a post-exam rest at a friend's home in Westport, Connecticut, Warner saw the pursuit plane plunge into the ocean not over a half-mile away. Without pausing for an instant, he rushed to a nearby yacht basin, found a rowboat and set out over the choppy waters of the Sound.
Meanwhile the aviator, who had suffered a fractured skull and several broken ribs, had managed to grasp a buoy after being thrown clear of his sinking plane.
Just as the pilot was about to loose his grasp on the buoy, Warner pulled him into his small boat and rowed him safely to shore.
