Brilliant Brown Swimmers Face Crimson Here Tonight

Coach Hal Ulen's Varsity swimmers will cross the Rubicon tonight, as they meet a strong Brown team in the Crimson's first major test of the current campaign.

"Win this one for Harris" is the motto of the Harvard mermen, for this will be the last meet in which their captain will compete before he leaves College in February to attend Business School.

Despite the emotional lift which the team will have in its efforts to present Harris with a farewell victory, nevertheless, it will probably swim one of its toughest meets in the season tonight, for the Bruins, paced by a group of Sophomore stars from last year's undefeated Freshman squad, invade Cambridge with one of the strongest teams they have had in many a year. Last year the Crimson defeated Brown 62-13; this year may prove to be an entirely different story.

Sophomore Phil Carson is undoubtedly the individual star of the Brown team. Usually entered in the 220 and 440, he starred in prep school at Mercersburg, was last year's yearling captain fro the Bruins, and is expected to break every New England college record on the books this season.

Captain-elect Not to Compete

Brown's fastest sprinters, Larry Berns, Joe Capouch and Tim Joyner, are also second year men. An inkling of their ability is given by the fact that last year they teamed with Carson to set the New England intercollegiate Freshman record for the 400-yard relay of 3:45.1.

Of course, all has not been roses for the Bruin team this year, as late last fall they lost Bill Irvine, captain-elect and the team's ace diver, to the Army. To replace Irvine, Brown is depending upon sophomore John Ahearn, who starred last year for the yearlings, and Junior Hank Gossler. From the accounts received concerning these men they are very definitely to be depended on to give Shaw McCutcheon, Harvard;s top diver, a stiff fight for first place in the diving event.

Crimson Potentially Powerful

The leading backstrokers, Tim Joyner and Ed Lawson, are also Sophomores, and the outstanding breaststrokes are Senior Pete Brown and Sophomore Frank MCDonough.

On the other side of the picture, Harvard presents a team which, while not spectacular, is quite able to show Brown how powerful a Ulen-coached team usually is.

As in the past three meets, the Crimson will be depending chiefly on star backstroker Bill Drucker, who will probably let himself go all out tonight for the first time this season, ace diver Shaw McCutcheon, who garnered 108.8 points in the meet with Greenwood last Saturday night, and "Big John" Eusden, who has been consistently cutting down his 50-yard free style times throughout the present campaign.

The Varsity meet starts at 8:45 o'clock in the Indoor Athletic Building, and prior to this there will be a Yardling meet with the Bruin Freshmen at 7:30 o'clock.
