8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
A graduation and draft-depleted soccer team greated Jim McDonald yesterday afternoon as he began his first season as Varsity coach.
McDonald comes up from training the Yardlings to replace Jack Carr, who resigned last winter to concentrate on his law practice. Andrew "Polly" Guda, who played in the 1936 Olympics and has coached the Jayvees for several seasons, who is filling the Freshman post, met his new charges for the first time yesterday.
Five first string Varsity men of last year have graduated, leaving a series of serious rents in the line-up. Bill Edgar, George Hanford, and Lou Vorley are gone from the offensive, while Captain Dave Ives and Roger Oresman have left both fullback spots blank.
Murphy to be Drafted
Now filling the right inside position, Hank Murphy expects a draft call in the near future. Andy McCook is ineligible and Chick Lowe is still mending a broken leg.
Veterans available for action include Captain, Jack Penson, who minds the goal, and a group of Juniors including "Herky" Herkovits, Jack Calhoun, and insides Gifford and Sawhill. A new star with great possibilities is Wes Truscott, of Buenos Aires, a Junior who was ineligible last season as he lacked a year's residence at the College.
Calls on Sophomores
The first string fullbacks of last year's Freshman sqquad, Olie Taylor and Bob Harbison, are counted on to support Penson around the nets; while Sophomore Thayer Drake, Eli Berman, and "Bucky" Buckingham may break into the offensive line-up.
McDonald's schedule of nine games is both long and difficult. Chief changes from last season are the substitution of Army for Williams and the addition of Clark University.
