In accordance with an ancient custom symbolizing the historic ties between Harvard and Middlesex county, the High Sheriff, Mr. McEiroy, called the morning exercises in Sever Quadrangle to order, striking the paltform thrice with his scabbard. He announced "The Meeting will come to order." Dean Sperry then offered prayer, and the University choir, directed by G. Wallace Woodworth, sang.
The followed three "Commencement Parts" delivered by students graduating from Harvard with special honors. Melvin H. Freedman '41 of Brookline, Mass., delivered the Latin dissertation; and dissertations in English were given by Richard B. Wolf '41, of New York City and Lemuel S. Hillman '41 of Grand Rapids, Mich.
Next, President Conant awarded the degrees to students graduating from Harvard University. Class marshals stepped to the paltform to accept the degrees on behalf of the members of the various graduating classes.
