Climaxing a week full of activities, approximately 2,200 degrees will be awarded at Harvard's 290th Commencement on Thursday, June 19. The program for the day starts at 9 o'clock, when the Seniors assemble in front of Holworthy Hall preparatory to a chapel service.
At 9:45 o'clock the academic procession will form in the Yard and march to the Sever Quadrangle, where the Commencement Parts will be delivered and degrees will be conferred. Following this, the Alumni Spread will be held in the Harvard Yard, and the Class of 1915 Spread in the Straus Hall Quadrangle.
At 2 o'clock all alumni will march to the Sever Quadrangle, where they will be addressed by President Conant, Governor Saltonstall, and two others.
The second major event is Class Day, which occurs on Wednesday, June 18. Festivities will begin at 11:30 in the morning, when the Senior Class meets in the House Triangle for the Class Oration, Poem, and Ode. Lunch will then be served at the Houses, after which the parade to the Stadium will form at 1:30. Stadium exercises include the Ivy Oration and the confetti battle.
Other events of Commencement Week are the Baccalaureate Service on Sunday, June 15, the Senior Spread in Lowell House on Monday evening, and the annual meeting of the Harvard Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa on Friday morning.
Clad in caps and gowns, the Seniors will assemble for the Baccalaureate Service in front of Holworthy Hall on Sunday at 3:30 o'clock. The sermen will be delivered by President Conant, and the service is open to Seniors and their families. The PBK meeting will be held at 11 o'clock in Sanders Theatre and is open to the public.
Headed by Peter Magowan, with the assistance of John G. Penson and William H. Young, Jr., all of the Class of '42, a corps of Junior Ushers will assist at the Baccalaureate Service, the Senior Spread, and Class Day.
