Eliot Crews Win to Keep Trophy

Oarsmen Set Record To Scuttle Puritans

For the second year in a row the crews of Eliot House swept the river as the Merrymen retained the Alexander Agassiz Cup for another season. The first Eliot boat had two and a half lengths to spare over second place Winthrop and the seconds coasted home three lengths in front of Adams House.

The big cup which was first raced for in 1932, and which is marked with spaces for the names of the winning House crew up to and including the distant year of 2033, has now fallen to Eliot House three times in its short history. Previously Kirkland and Phillips Brooks House were tied with the Elephants with two victories each.

Broke House Record

Captained by Tom Mosely, this year's winners also set a new official House record of 7:06. The previous record of 7:08 for the Henley distance was broken by the Merrymen Saturday, but since this was not in a House race, it could not be counted.

In the first crew race Eliot and Winthrop started evenly, but at the Harvard Bridge, Eliot under George Hibbert's stroking had a length over the Puritans and they extended their margin all the way to the finish. Lowell nosed Kirkland by half a length for their place, and Adams House was last.

Eliot's second crew, stroked by Doug Rumsey, had things all its own way. Jumping to a half-length lead over the field in the first ten strokes, the seconds eased over the course in 7:27, finishing three lengths ahead of Adams House, without raising the stroke at the end. Lowell came in third ahead of Winthrop and Kirkland.
