Cornell Nine Defeats Crimson in Double-Header 5 to 0 and 2 to 1

Cornell's Big Red nine made a double killing Saturday by whipping Coach Floyd Stahl's Varsity 5 to 0 and 2 to 1 in their first Eastern Intercollegiate League games. Pitching of the home team stopped the Crimson invaders and confined them to three hits for the afternoon.

Cornell's ace, Wally Sickles, pitched the whole way in the first game and gave up a lone single to Gil Whittemore. At the same time Mike Ruddy led an eight hit attack against Harvard's Mort Waldstein and Jack Schwede that piled up five runs.

In the nightcap Burgy Ayres fought a pitching duel with Phil Smith. Cornell led until the first of the seventh and last inning as a result of a run in the fourth. In the seventh Whittemore drove in the tying run only to have Cornell come back in their half with another. This was the result of a hit batter, two singles and an error by Ayres on the relay to the plate. Smith pitched the whole game for the Big Red and gave up only two hits, singles, to Captain Keyes and Lou Clay.

At Soldiers Field the Freshman nine lost its game to Wentworth Institute 9 to 6. Wentworth scored five times off "Red" Wilcox in the first two innings. The Yardlings had their big chance in the fifth but they left two men stranded and fell one run short. "Sandy" MacMillan homered in the first with none on.
