Captain Don Donahue and Sophomore flash Doug Pirnie shared the laurels in Harvard's 88 to 52 off-the-record trouncing of Boston College's track squad Saturday. Each captured a pair of firsts and Donahue supplemented his victories with a third in Pirnie's own 100-yard specialty. The Yardlings set back the Eagle yearlings 70 to 45.
Pirnie's century-sprint win over B. C.'s famous Gill Walker was the meet's most notable accomplishment. Walker has hit 9.8 seconds in the past but Pirnie has still not broken a flat 10 seconds. Pirnie's other place came in the 220 dash when he beat B. C.'s co-captain Bill Dowd to the tape. Donahue took his customary firsts in the two hurdle events.
B. C.'s victory in the mile relay was easily the day's thriller. Larry Corbett kept neck-and-neck with his opponent Riley, and in the second lap Ted Graves loped ahead by a large margin. McCarthy overtook Harvard's Lyons, and Dowd widened the lead over Crimson anchor man Tom Watkins.
The distance events were B. C.'s stronghold and only Rollo Campbell in the 660-yard run was able to save a Harvard first from the four races. Bob Kent and Bill Young gained seconds in the longer distances.
The high jump resulted in a triple tie between John Bunker, Mike Zara, and the visitors' Ralph Ryan; while Dave Ives led the distance leapers. Mike Ford, Chet d'Autremont, and Bill Couch swept the pole vault for Harvard.
Friday afternoon's field events saw Dick Pfister take the shot put and Tom Lacey the javelin; while B. C. won firsts in the hammer throw and discus.
