James McDonald, former professional soccer star and coach of the Freshman soccer team since 1934, has been appointed coach of the Varsity soccer team, the Harvard Athletic Association announced today. He succeeds John F. Carr who resigned this January because of the press of his law practice. Carr had been head coach of soccer since 1929.
Andrew Guyda, a member of the 1936 U. S. Olympic Soccer Team and later an outstanding professional player in Boston, was promoted from assistant coach of the Varsity soccer team to head coach of the Freshmen. He has been assistant coach for the past three years. Guyda is 34 years old and attended Lowell Institute and M. I. T.
McDonald, who is 53 years old and a native of Glasgow, Scotland, was a professional soccer player for twelve years before he became coach of the Boston Professional Soccer Club in 1924. He was with the Boston Club until he joined the Harvard coaching staff in 1933. He was varsity coach of the Northeastern University soccer team from 1928 to 1930.
