Tom Winship sped down a hard-packed Sherburne trail in Pinkham Notch yesterday morning in the fast time of 2 minutes 36 seconds capturing the annual Harvard ski race and securing as an added honor the trophy recently offered to the winner of this traditional event.
Conditions for the race were excellent, since most of the Harvard racers had well tramped out the course on the preceeding day, and there was ample snow on the trail. Chief of course for the race was, Coach Bill Halsey, and Woody Strandberg and Henry Bigelow assisted as timing and starting officials.
Close behind Winship, in second place was Phil Ball, a law student who turned in a clocking of 2.44.6. Tom Abbot was third in the field of 31 entries from the University, with Jim Gamble and Tom Cabot flished fourth and fifth.
Dave Goldthwait, who won the race last year, only managed sixth place in yesterday's race. Others were 7, F. W. Flac; 8, R. Comey; 9, R. Wilson; 10, J. Notman; 11, Eric McFlare; 12, J. Powell; 13, T. Motley; 14, J. Page; 15, P. Sheeline; 16, F. Snyder; 17, S. Lacey; 18, W. Appel; 19, R. Eustis; 20, W. LaCroix; 21, A. Morrison; 22, A. Waite 23, J. Crawford; 24, G. L. Wilson; 25, R. Coe; 26; J. McAuliffe; 27, R. Lane; 28, R. Stone; 29, C. Purinton; 30, W. Apthrop; 31. G. Nichols.
