Working out from under a 10 to 8 deficit, the fencers came back to top Columbia by the slim margin of one point in a 14 to 13 match fought Saturday in New York.
Columbia gained an early lead when the Crimson forces surrendered both the foil and epee bouts with 5 to 4 decisions, but the Lions failed to maintain the margin they gained when they encountered the strong saber trio, which left them, on the low end of a 6 to 3 score.
The Wright '42, Winfield Alberts '42, and Robert Batt '41 made up the saber trio. Their bout, and with it the match, was clinched when Alberts overcame a 3 to 2 handicap and defeated Columbia's Norman Blackman, 5 to 2. Wright vanquished all three of his opponents.
The team, which has been looking forward to the Columbia match as one of its toughest, appeared in better form Saturday than it has in its last two or three bouts, which have gone by close margins to opponents.
