Professor Prepares Text on Criminal Law

To prepare the first complete text on criminal law to be published since 1865, Professor Sam Bass Warner, of the Law School, has been relieved of his teaching duties and is devoting all of his time to a survey of the field, Dean Landis revealed in his annual report.

"In the field of criminal law no great text has been written since that written by Bishop in 1865," Dean Landis said. "Statutes and judicial decisions, new methods and theories of punishment, have, however, greatly altered the whole substance of criminal law since that time. Nevertheless no thorough-going survey of the field has since been made."

Professor Warner "will recommend and draft legislation when that may seem desirable but his ultimate goal is the production of a comprehensive treatise in the field," Dean Landis said.

The Uniform Pistol Act, which has just been approved by the Interstate Commission on Crime, the Commissioners on Uniform. State Laws, and the American Bar Association, is the first result of Professor Warner's work.

Other research projects in criminology and international law are being carried on by Professor Sheldon Glueck and Manley O. Hudson, both of the Law School, Dean Landis added.
