Speaking before a small Winthrop House audience last night, Governor Leverett Saltonstall '14 said that the fundamental job of local government now is to look after the people's welfare so that they may perform the extraordinary tasks assigned to them daily by the Federal government.
Although he proudly commented on the State Guard, the State vocational schools, and the newly established Committees of Public Safety as examples of state measures helping the Federal government, Governor Saltonstall said that the strength of the United States still lies in the ability of the states to maintain their individuality.
Governor Saltonstall added that he felt that the great problem of industry is to "farm out" the jobs and "farm down" the contracts. By that he meant that everybody should have a job aiding national defense and that no big company should gain a surplus of defense contracts.
