Dean's Office Announces Cut Regulations For Recess

Although attendance will not be reported in courses taken primarily by Juniors and Seniors, absences will be recorded in Freshman and Sophomore classes immediately preceding and following the Christmas recess, the Dean's Office has announced.

Upperclassmen not on Dean's List, however, are not encouraged to leave Cambridge early, while Freshmen and Sophomores without such rating are required to attend their final classes. Men on probation must register at the Dean's Office on the day of their last class.

The Dean's statement is as follows:

"The Dean's Office will repeat at the time of the Christmas recess the experiment which has been tried in recent years regarding the reporting of attendance in advanced courses before and after the vacation. Absences from the last class before and from the first class after the vacation. Absences from the last class before and from the first class after the Christmas recess in courses taken primarily by Juniors and Seniors (that is, courses for which attendance reports are not regularly required during term time) will not be reported to the Dean's office. The purpose of this policy is not to encourage Juniors and Seniors or other men not on the Dean's List to extend the Christmas recess and to get away from Cambridge, but rather to permit greater freedom to the student in arranging his work while in Cambridge and also to avoid a complicated system of taking attendance in advanced courses at the time of vacations. The plan is in keeping with the recent tendency in the direction of placing students in the upper two years more largely on their own responsibility.

"In the case of a Junior or Senior not on the Dean's List whose last class before or first class after the Christmas recess is in a course in which attendance is regularly taken, absence will not mean immediate disciplinary action, but such absences will naturally be regarded as an indication of neglect of work if a student's record becomes unsatisfactory in any way.

"The attention of students is called to the fact that they are expected to be in residence during the Reading - Period, which lasts from January 5 to 14 inclusive.

Freshmen and Sophomores Not Affected

"Especial attention is called to the fact that the experiment above mentioned does not apply to Sophomores or to Freshmen, including both new and dropped Freshmen, because attendance is regularly reported in practically all of the courses taken by them. Freshmen and Sophomores not on the Dean's List who extend the Christmas recess will be subject to disciplinary action as in the past. Alumni the necessary 34 points.
