Yale's soccer captain George Haines broke up a 1-1 deadlock in the final quarter of yesterday's Varsity soccer match with a long looping kick to upset the Crimson eleven 2 to 1 and to knock the bottom out of the Harvard booters' season.
Until Haines' score, the battle, the hardest fought of the campaign, was anybody's game. Dick Gifford had set the Varsity out in front in the opening minutes with a beautiful shot into the upper left-hand corner of the Yale goal, but it had been equalized by the shot Jack Hopkins of the Elis headed in the third period.
The completely exhausted and generally outplayed home force was helpless when after their second score the Elis froze the ball.
Goalie and captain Jack Penson was badly injured in the fray when he successfully but dangerously deflected a clear shot at the Crimson goal. Two other Harvard players stood out over the efforts of their teammates. Jack Clarke at center half played until he literally dropped, holding the entire defense together; while Olie Taylor at left fullback superbly kept the ball out of Harvard territory with long and timely kicks.
The breaks and the wind controlled the outcome to a much lesser extent than had been anticipated and the Yale eleven proved much stronger than pregame reports had indicated. They not only had better individual control of the ball than the losers, but showed themselves as adopt in the rough and tumble game Harvard introduced to counteract the finished work of the Bulldogs.
