Loren G. MacKinney '42 has been awarded the Francis II. Burr scholarship, which is given each year to the outstanding scholar-athlete in the Senior Class, it was announced yesterday by the University.
MacKinney, who is probably best known for his brilliant football exploits, is a resident of Eliot House and comes from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where his father is a professor of History at the University of North Carolina.
Although he did not even play football in his Freshman year here, he caused a sensation in Harvard football history when he made the starting lineup as a Sophomore for the first game of the season against Amherst after only three weeks of practice.
All-American
From that game to the present time, he has become so much of an asset to Dick Harlow that he has played in every game for three seasons unless kept out by injuries. Last year, he was chosen by the Associated Press for the All-American second team.
In addition to playing left end for three years on the Varsity football team, he captained his Freshman track team, is secretary of the Student Council, chairman of the Eliot House Committee, and an honor student on the Dean's List.
As a junior, he won the Richard P. Parker scholarship for "high character and ability," and he now holds the Casper H. Burton, Jr. scholarship.
As winner of the coveted honor which goes annually to the Senior who "combines as nearly as possible Burr's remarkable qualities of character, leadership, scholarship and athletic ability," he will receive a copy of the memorial life of Burr and a stipend.
Last year's winner was Don Donahue '41, track star, who was preceded by Thomas V. Healey '40, football and baseball star. Richard H. Sullivan '39, Student Council president, and Vernon H. Struck '38, football luminary, were other recent winners.
