University Net Tournament Starts Quarter-Final Round

After lying practically dormant for almost a week because of bad weather, the University tennis tournament suddenly sprang to life over the past weekend with almost all matches played up to the quarter final round.

Bob Freedman, New England Intercollegiate singles champion and star on last year's Yale team, leads the field as he reached the semi-finals yesterday by virtue of a straight set victory over will Nicholl on the Divinity Field courts.

Freedman, seeded number two in this year's tourney, played his usual steady game to win 6-0, 6-3. He had previously beaten Sophomore Dick Sorlien 6-3, 6-1 to gain the quarter finals.

Everts Has Close Call

The other seeded players have all reached the quarter final round with comparatively easy matches. The lone exception was Al Everts, defending champion, who barely squeezed out of a three set struggle with Lin Burton, unseeded Senior entrant. Everts was far from his usual form in this match as the 7-5, 6-8, 6-3 score would indicate.

Jim Jenkins, seeded third, had little difficulty reaching the quarters, outplaying Bud Lyman in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, while the only other seeded entrant, Orme Wilson defeated Art Brooks 6-0, 6-2 to gain the same round. Wilson, this year's captain of the tennis team and seeded fourth, was defeated by Brooks in the finals of this year's Summer School tournament.

Barney Straus provided a minor upset when he defeated Howie Ezell to gain the quarter final round. Ezell, irregular on last year's Varsity, won the first set 7-5, dropped the second 8-6 and failed to keep up the pace, losing the third 6-3.

The only other player to reach the quarters was Hugh Hyde, who subdued a gallant bid for an upset yesterday by Norm Neagle. Hyde had difficulty winning the first set 8-6 and looked beaten as he lost the second 6-3, but bounced back in the nick of time to save the last one 6-4.

Russ Ellis, Senior letterman, and Bob Boochever of last year's Cornel net team, will try to finish their close match this afternoon to see which one goes into the quarter final round. They each took one set 6-3 and were tie up at 6-all in the third when darkness prevented further play.

In the Freshman tourney, Zinnser is far ahead of anyone else. He won ove Caldwell in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the finals. Collinson and Eaton have reached the semi-final round in the other bracket.
