Leverett Conquers Eliot As Lowell Noses Out Funsters

Fireworks were popping left and right yesterday afternoon as the Bunnies nosed out the Elephants on a conversion kick that bounced off the crossbar for a 7 to 6 win, while on another field Lowell staged a last-second fight to shade a battling-but-tired Dunster eleven 6 to 0.

With Professor Merriman, House Master, calmly looking on from the side-lines, Eliot's sons seemed to have the game sewed up on a touchdown plunge late in the first half after both teams had been pushing each other all over the field.

Starting from the midfield stripe, the Elephants began their drive with a 15-yard pass, Waters to Grier. Another pass, this time from Orrin Daniels to right end Dick Johnson, carried the ball to the six-yard line. Here the Bunnies received a five-yard offside penalty and set the stage for George Waters' final plunge through center to score. Daniel's pass to Johnson for the extra point failed, and the Elephants led 6 to 0 at the half.

But the Rabbits came back fighting and advanced well into Eliot territory. Interference on a pass from Charlie Palm brought the ball to the three yard stripe. On the next play, Palm drove through center to tie the score.

Off the bench, nose bleeding from earlier action, came Normie Cameron to boot the winning point. The center snapped the ball, Cameron kicked, a low aerial that zoomed off the hand of an opposing lineman, flew high in the air, came down, hit the crossbar and bounded over for the winning point. This was enough for a victory, and the Bunnies trotted off with a hard won 7 to 6 win.

Meanwhile, Dunster and Lowell were going at it, tooth and nall, with the Bell Boys again staging a last-second thrust to carry them to victory. With three minutes of play remaining, the Lowell backfield swung into action.

Lowell Offense Clicks

That well-known pass attack, Captain Johnny Felmeth to Dick Sorlein, brought the ball into Dunster territory. Fullback Bill Murphy then tore through tackle for another 10 yards, and Johnny Felmeth drove around right end for 20 more yards. The Funsters, however, tightened their defense at this point and regained possession of the ball in front of their own goal line.

Lowell was not to be stopped. Sorlein returned the punt to the Funster's 17, and on the next play Felmeth heaved a touchdown pass to right end Bob Axtell. Felmeth's pass to Sorlein failed for the exera point, and the game ended 30 seconds later, Lowell victor 6 to 0.

Dunster's loss lay in its lack of reserve material. While Lowell had two full teams to draw from, the Funsters had to rely on their first string of eleven men. "Bucking Frank" Ferdinand and "Shifty Don" Coles stood out for the Funsters as they frequently cracked the Lowell defense, but when the chips were down, the Bell Boys proved too tough.
