Yale, Brown, Cornell Adopt Three-Semester Schedules

Accelerated, year - round academic schedules have been adopted at Yale, Brown, and Cornell, with the first two going on a three-semester basis while the Ithaca institution is enlarging its summer session to 16 weeks.

Yale still requires eight terms of work, and the same rules of concentration and distribution are in effect. It is now possible to graduate in two and two-thirds years, although the summer vacation is not compulsory.

The Elis will have their regular two-week spring vacation, although Commencement has been put forward one week to June 3-9. July 6 will be the start of the summer vacation, which will extend to September 26, followed by a one-week recess and the regular fall term.

Juniors Admitted to Brown

Besides revising its calendar, Brown will further shorten the time needed for secondary and higher education by accepting high school Juniors of exceptional standing for the Freshman class.

Mid-year examinations will last only two hours instead of three, and will be given three times a day, beginning at 9, 2, and 7 o'clock. The examination period will take only one week, and reading period has been eliminated.

The three-semester system will go into full swing with the re-opening of college June 15 or 23, and from then on the terms will be known as the Fall, Spring, and Winter Semesters. The plan will be kept in force "as long as it seems necessary," according to President Wriston.

Session in Three Parts

Cornell's summer session, also optional, is divided into three units of five, six, and five weeks respectively, in each of which a student may obtain six hours credit. Newly entering Freshmen may enter the second unit of the term.

Other changes in this year's schedule are the restriction of the final examination period to one week at the end of each term, complete elimination of this year's spring vacation, and advancement of Commencement to May 25.

A week-long spring vacation will be granted next school year, but the Christmas vacation will be cut down to one week with students returning December 28 and Thanksgiving vacation omitted.
