LOWELL HOUSE PRANKSTERS PLAY JOKE ON LIBRARIANS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Back in the good old days, Harvard used to chain its library books to the shelves, to prevent over-prehensile undergraduates from making off with the volumes. Yesterday the librarians in Lowell House decided it was time to resume the custom.

For yesterday morning, as he opened the library door, student librarian Jack Penson '42 found to his amazement that during the night some wits had taken all of the 3000 volumes in the main reading room and reversed them so that the titles faced the wall. Five librarians placed the books in order after working three hours.

Janitor Joe Brady declared that it "smelled like an inside job," but nobody was able to explain how the culprits managed to do the deed, for the library doors were locked, and the windows open out two stories above street level.
