NO COLLEGE COMMUNITY FUND DRIVE; COUNCIL PLANS BIG FALL CHARITY PUSH

The Greater Boston Community Fund will not conduct a room-to-room canvass for funds among undergraduates this year, but will be glad to receive contributions at the Fund headquarters in Wadsworth House, it was announced last night.

At the same time E. Langdon Burwell '41, treasurer of the Student Council and president of Phillips Brooks House, stated that the Council had voted to abolish its traditional policy of soliciting funds only at registration.

Next October, according to Burwell, the Council will stage a high-pressure drive for contributions in collaboration with P. B. H., the Community Fund, the Red Cross, and other local and national charitable organizations.

One-drive System

Traditionally the Council asks for donations when students register in September, and promises in return that no other charity drives will be made during the year either by the Council or by other organizations. However, exceptions have been made, notably the drive for a refugee fund two years ago and special war charity campaigns since that time. There will be no more drives this year, Burwell said.

At the present time the only contributions which local charities obtain from the undergraduate body come out of the Student Council budget, and are very small. For example, last year the Community Fund got a total contribution of less than $1000 from the undergraduate body, including the proceeds of a special drive in the Clubs, while the teaching staff contributed $22,000, and the University employes kicked in with $4,000.

Next year, in an effort to raise the total take, the Council will set up a skeleton organization in each House and in the Yard, and with the advice of the Community Fund and the active help of members of Brooks House will conduct a vigorous campaign of personal solicitation. The drive will probably take place in the second or third week in October.
