Led by Langdon Gilkey, who downed Dave Freeman of Yale, National Intercollegiate Champion, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 to cop the New England Intercollegiate Singles title, Coach Barnaby's tennis squad placed enough men in the final brackets of the tournament to win the New England championship by a comfortable margin yesterday at Providence.

The Crimson combination of Johnny Palfrey and Jack Stewart who had reached the finals by dropping Gilkey and Captain Dave Burt, lost the doubles championship to a Williams team in straight sets, 6-4, 9-7.

Down Amherst

Against Amherst in a dual meet away yesterday afternoon the Crimson was equally successful, winning by a score of 7-2. Captain Burt, although still tired from his morning matches at Brown, polished off Wiley Lamar in the top singles, 6-3, 6-2. Chet Legg, playing number two on Jack Barnaby's outfit, lost a difficult three-setter to Amherst's Captain Rodman, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. The Lord Jeffs picked up their other point in the second doubles when Gray and Heisler defeated Gordie Hough and Don Marvin, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.

Dick Dorson's powerful Freshman squad, defeated only by Dartmouth, handed Exeter an 8-1 pasting on the Jarvis courts. Jim Jenkins lost a close match in the number one singles to Exonian Blair Hawley, but Aubrey Gould, Will Nicholl, Don Daniels, Tom Baker, and Tom Sears won their matches with comparative ease.

Despite its fatigue from having played so much tennis yesterday, the Varsity is expected to win this afternoon when it tangles with Brown on the Divinity courts.
