After 25 years of futile petitioning for evening laboratories, Chemistry students seem to have attained their goal at last, according to William B. Schallek '41, chairman of the Yard Questions Committee of the Student Union, which circulated the successful petition.
The plea, signed by 264 out of 300-odd Chemistry students, was approved by the department at a meeting last Thursday, and the details of the plan were worked out during the vacation by Gregory P. Baxter '96, Theodore William Richards Professor of Chemistry and chairman of the department, and Arthur B. Lamb, Erving Professor of Chemistry and Director of the Chemical Laboratory.
The proposals, which require only the approval of Dean Hanford before they take effect next Monday, provide for the opening of the laboratories without stockroom service on Monday and Thursday nights from 7 to 10 o'clock, for members of courses 2, 3, 4, and 6. No extra charge will be made.
The campaign was initiated by the Yard Questions Committee in the feeling that under the existing system Chemistry students were barred from sports and other afternoon activities because of the long afternoon laboratory periods.
