Stepping into his office for the first time since March 5, President Conant gave an account yesterday of his annual western barnstorming tour which was a long sequence of speeches, confabs with educational bigwigs, honorary degrees, and interviews with "Oomph Girl" Ann Sheridan's publicity agents.
High mark of the trip was the Charter Day ceremonies at the University of California campuses in Los Angeles and Berkeley, where President Conant was the guest speaker.
Very much impressed by the "educational undertakings and scientific research" being carried on at the U. of C., President Conant said, "To me it was very heartening and encouraging to find that a state university, largely financed by taxes and controlled by a state government, was so interested in advancing knowledge on all fronts."
While he was in California, Ann Sheridan's agents invited him to Hollywood to see the movie actress so that he could carry his "impression of her east to Harvard."
