Calderwood Named Chairman of Law Advisers; Zariski to Lecture in Math

Simultaneously with the announcement of six appointments to the Department of Mathematics, effective next September, the College yesterday awarded two of the outstanding annual prize awards to undergraduates.

The John Osborne Sargent prize of $200, for the best metrical translation into English of a lyric poem of Horace, was divided equally between Richard L. Wing '40, of New Bedford, and Melvin H. Freedman '41, of Brookline.

The Elizabeth Wilder prize of $100, for high rating in the mid-year examination in elementary German, was divided equally between Robert G. Axtell '43, of Evanston, Illinois, and Milton W. Hamolsky '43 of Lynn.

Calderwood Heads Advisers

The University announced the appointment yesterday of John N. Calderwood 2L, of Grove City, Pennsylvania, as chairman of the Board of Student Advisers in the Law School for the next academic year.

Besides Oscar Zariski, professor of Mathematics at Johns Hopkins University and one of the outstanding algebraic geometrists in the country, who will serve as visiting lecturer on Mathematics next year, the University announced that the following men will serve as tutors in the department next year:

Albert L. Whiteman, Ph.D. University of Pennsylvania '40; Paul E. Guenther, A.M. '38, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Irving Kaplansky, of Toronto, Ontario; George W. Mackey, A.M. '39, of Houston, Texas, and Frank M. Stewart, A.B. Princeton '39, of Beirut, Syria.
