Four engine companies of two pieces each, two ladder trucks, a rescue truck, and most of the Cambridge police force jammed the center of the Square at 8 o'clock last night to extinguish a configuration in the bedroom of Miss V. M. Union of 20 Boylston Street.
Apparently caused by a cigarette which ignited a bed mattress and spread to an easy chair, the fire was estimated to have caused damage of approximately $500 to the small apartment. Miss Union escaped injury.
Traffic in the Square was held up for fifteen minutes while firemen, with the help of the 11 engines and hose lines, brought the fire under control before a crowd of several hundred people.
