La Guardia Will Speak Twice At Meetings Tomorrow Night

CHEMISTRY LABS TO BE OPEN MONDAY, THURSDAY NIGHTS

In answer to a petition from science concentrators for more time in the labs, the Department of Chemistry announced last night that beginning tomorrow evening and for the remainder of the college year the laboratories of Chemistry 3, 2, 6, and 4 will be open on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7 until 10 o'clock.

Dean Chase, commenting on the experiment, announced that no charge would be made for the privilege of evening slabs, although the petitioners had offered to pay for the extra time. The administrative officers feel, he stated, that it would not be fair to the students to charge a fee.

Florello La Guardia, Mayor of New York City, will address an open meeting in the Indoor Athletic Building tomorrow night at 8 o'clock under the auspices of the Council of Government Concentrators, Langdon P. Marvin, Jr. '41, Council president, announced last night.

This speech will follow hard on the heels of a special dinner for Seniors in Eliot House at which time the Little Flower, who returns today from a trip to Oregon, will talk informally for a few minutes. He has not yet announced the topic for either speech.

Only Available Site

The Mayor will speak in the Indoor Athletic Building, not because he plans to play basketball, but because no other auditoriums are available tomorrow night, when approximately ten lectures and large meetings are scheduled here.

Although La Guardia is definitely coming, and will address both groups, it looked on Monday as if the Mayor's maiden appearance at Harvard would be canceled.

At that time Langdon P. Marvin '98, here to attend a meeting of the Board of Overseers, received a telegram saying "Mayor so distressed by prospect three Harvard meetings and three speeches sends word his office cancel whole thing though already pledged to Culter for Thursday."

The telegram was signed by Charles C. Burlingham '79, a friend of La Guardia's who had persuaded him to speak at the Senior dinner and who apparently thought that it was Marvin pere, not Marvin fils, who was running the open meeting following the Senior dinner.

Conference Monday

At a conference in the South Station Monday afternoon between Marvins junior and senior and Elliot C. Culter '09, President of the Alumni Association, which is sponsoring the Senior dinner, the mix-up was straightened out, and the Mayor persuaded to come to Harvard despite the fact that he would be called on to speak twice.

The confusion apparently occurred because Marvin booked La Guardia through his secretary, while Burlingham signed up the Mayor in person.
