Actors from the University and actresses from Radcliffe and Wellesley have been chosen to play in Handel's pastoral opera, "Acis and Galatea" to be presented by the Lowell House Musical Society in Lowell House Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, March 12 and 13.
John W. Brainerd '40 president of the society, announced that Miss Eleanor Baker, leading soloist of last year's opera, will play the principle feminine lead Galatea. Harrison M. Rainie '40 will take the part of Acis.
Rehearsals are already under way, and the opera is taking shape under the direction of Conductor Malcolm H. Holmes, Dramatic Director Robert A. Brooks '40, and Miss Charlotte MacEwan of Wellesley, the Choreographer.
"Acis and Galatea" is the third opera given by the Lowell House Musical Society. The first was Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas," which was the Boston debut of that opera. Last year the Society presented the American premiere of the Dryden-Purcell dramatic opera, "King Arthur." This is the first year that a dance group from Wellesley has been included in the cast.
The girls from Radcliffe who will join in the opera are under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Hutchison of Radcliffe, assistant Conductor of the girls chorus. They are 21 in number.
Costumes and sets are entirely controlled and planned by the students themselves.
