The membership of two new committees, one on distribution and the other on the relation between the administration and the Faculty, was announced yesterday by William S. Ferguson, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
Chairmanned by Julian L. Coolidge '95, professor of Mathematics, the latter committee, Dean Ferguson stated, "will consider the organization of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the channels of communication between the several departments and the administration."
Faculty Organization
The problem of Faculty organization has recurred frequently in recent years. A few years ago when the Faculty had grown to an unwieldy size of over 300, and average attendance at meetings had dwindled to less than 100, the Faculty Council was established.
Designed to replace the Faculty except for the awarding of degrees, the Council was a small representative group. This fall, however, it was suspended and regular, full Faculty meetings restored. The new committee is trying to provide a more workable substitute for these.
Distribution in Areas
The committee on distribution, chair-manned by Dean Leighton, was appointed as a result of two Faculty meetings devoted to problems raised by the Student Council report on Education. "It is understood," Dean Ferguson said, "that the committee will make specific recommendations to the Faculty regarding minimum requirements for distribution in the areas of the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences."
Dean Leighton's committee consists of Mason Hammond '25, associate professor of Greek and Latin and of History, Edwin C. Kemble, professor of Physics, Theodore Morrison '32, lecturer in English and director of English A, and John M. Potter '26, assistant professor of History and Literature.
Ex-office on the committee are the chairmen of the area committees, William C. Greene '11, associate professor of Greek and Latin, Talcott Parsons, associate professor of Sociology, and Marshall H. Stone, professor of Mathematics.
The members of Professor Coolidge's committee are Kenneth T. Bainbridge, associate professor of Physics, William L. Crum, professor of Economics, Frederick B. Deknatel, instructor in Fine Arts, Merle Fainsod, assistant professor of Government, John H. Finley, Jr. '25, associate professor of Greek and Latin, and Frederick L. Risaw, professor of Biology.
William E. Hocking '01, Alford Professor of Natural Philosophy. Michael Karpovich, associate professor of History, and Professor Stone are also serving on Professor Coolidge's committee
